Question: General tips on photography at weddings?
I posted this question a few hours ago… and was a little disappointed and discouraged with the answers that I got. Basically, I was told that I won’t do a good job, my camera wasn’t good enough, and to go buy a bunch of accessories to enhance my photos.
I’m a beginner/amatur self taught “photographer”. I only take pictures as a hobby. My small high school didn’t have a photography class, so I haven’t had any lessons. I’ve been told my many people that I should submit my photos to contests and even take classes and take it further… but this is beside the point.
My boyfriend’s brother is getting married in a month. They can’t afford a photographer, so among others, I will be taking pictures on their big day. They know because they’re going to be without a professional photographer, they’re not going to have the best pictures in the world. The wife-to-be has seen my work, and asked if I would take some pictures for her at the wedding. So, I’m looking for tips to do the best I can, with the not-so-professional camera that I have.
Thank-you.
@bluespeed – Thanks for the advice. I don’t intend on acting at all “professional” because I know I’m far from it. I enjoy taking pictures, and that’s about it. The bride simply asked I take pictures during the wedding and I agreed. I don’t find her to be particularly uptight about the photos they get.

Make sure you check your camera settings before the wedding starts. You don’t want to be adjusting your exposure or anything while the bride is coming down the aisle! It may be beneficial to attend the rehearsal, just to practice and figure out the best spots to shoot from.
It’s best to take some pictures zoomed in, and some zoomed out. When the bride is entering, definitely take full body pictures, not zoomed in on her face. And do your best to get a shot of the bride and groom kissing
Take lots and lots of photos, especially if you have a digital camera. That way there’s lots to choose from, and a good chance that there will be some really good ones.
